The Story of the Seed: Student Blog Post Assignment #6: How Does Your Garden Grow?

                                                           How Our Seeds Grew
                                                              By Lincoln Juarez

Our plant has not been growing that much ,but has been growing enough to the point where we can tell it has made progress. Our plant has been using mitosis to reproduce cells asexually to look exactly like the parent plant. An advantage to producing asexually is that it allows successful organisms to reproduce quickly. This process helps our plant to produce little buds that then sprout into flowers which gives a visual of how the plant grows.
The plant uses photosynthesis to create food for itself by using energy from sunlight to produce glucose from carbon dioxide and water. The water and carbon dioxide are used to synthesize food during photosynthesis. The glucose that is created can then be converted into pyruvate which releases adenosine triphosphate or ATP by cellular respiration. Oxygen is also produced in this process and helps release energy from food during respiration. The oxygen in carbon dioxide is released as oxygen gas. The plant uses cellular respiration to create biochemical energy from nutrients into ATP.  These all factor into our plant's growth.
Plants need a number of minerals for healthy growth which are absorbed through the roots as mineral ions dissolved in the soil water. Two important mineral ions that plants need are nitrate, for making amino acids, which are needed to make proteins. Our plant would make PKG and Rubisco if there was a signal sent to the nucleus by encoding the large subunit gene in the chloroplast genome and encoding the small subunit genes as a multi-gene family in the nucleus. As you can see, all of these factors go into our plant's growth and helps it stay healthy and be able to grow.

Ella's Seed Story

During Ella's story of the seed experience, she learned that depending on the level of sodium in the water for the seed, the seed will grow very little, a lot, or not at all. Ella was surprised when she learned just how much it takes to plant a seeds. A lot goes into it such as, the positioning of the plant which determines how much sunlight the seed will get. Another big thing that goes into gardening that Ella learned was how much care the seeds need. One thing that made Ella laugh over the course of this project was being around her teammates and having fun with this project. Ella said that it is one of the more fun projects as you get to get up and interact with each other while still learning at the same time. When Ella found out that something so small, in this case the salt, could affect the growth of something like a plant it made her think harder. It was hard for her to wrap her head around this fact. Ella learned a lot in this story of the seed project, laughed with her teammates, and had to stop and think a bit harder to get to understand some things.

Abby Paradise Seed Story

Abby has learned that she enjoyed taking care of plants and plants effect each other. She was surpised about how plants could grow in bags. She had laughs with her team and many of them. Abby had to pause was when she started to think about how humans affected plants.

The Story of the Seed

Hello, my name is Lincoln Juarez. I have lived in San Jose, California my whole life. I have been through a few elementary school gardening experiences. In elementary school, our teachers would take us out to the garden to grow plants. I can't remember what we grew but, I do remember that it was a fun time. A person in my life who knows a lot about gardening is my neighbor, Craig. He has a lot of plants and flowers growing in his front and backyard. He has chickens which provide him and his family with fresh eggs. He is very smart when it comes to agricultural things.

The Story of the Seed

The Broccoli Bulletin

Hello, my name is Brandy Perez. I'm from Willow Glen, CA. My grandparents that lived in the Rose Garden area, have a large house that as a child i grew up in. With it's many bedrooms, large swimming pool, play rooms, and my personal favorite, a d.i.y garden, its is the house i call home. When my grandfather was alive, he had a large garden with tomatoes, strawberries, pumpkin, carrots, and many more. The garden is still there, but without my grandfather's true green thumb, my grandma tries her best to do as good of a job upkeeping the garden as he once did. From years of watching him plant, pick, and care for his many plants of all shapes and sizes, i too would like to someday have a colorful garden that inspires generations to come.

The Story of the Seed

My Name Is Grant Spruiell. I was born here in San Jose in 2002, and my grandparents live here as well. The most gardening experience i have is my mom's house back and front yard is covered with plants. In my early years i helped my mom work on plants and it was simple as to my knowing. My moms skills are very well rounded from cooking to gardening. My dads skills are not as well rounder but he is still okay at them. I have been taught how to garden along with my brother Nathan. My mom has many different plants around the house from herbs to tomato plants.

The Story of The Seed

My name is Jackson Dupler, I was born in Santa Clara and have lived in San Jose my entire life. I had a garden at my home until my family moved to a new house, but at my garden we only grew tomatoes and had one bell pepper plant. I remember very little because this was a very long time ago, so I probably remember very little. My grandmother knows a lot about gardening because she has a garden and also has vineyards and chickens, so she probably has a lot of experience of making food from scratch. And she is an amazing cook and her best food that she makes is fresh from her garden she makes a sorta egg salad type thing and it involves her own eggs and some of her fresh vegetables. When this project is done maybe ill know more about plants and can help my grandmother.
